Lt. Ralph Cyr, a graduate of Pittsford Mendon High School, attended the US Air Force Academy. While in the service, Lt. Cyr was very involved with Special Olympics wherever he was stationed. In October, 1986, Lt. Cyr was killed while flying an operation readiness mission. The" Outstanding Athlete" awards are given in his honor. The Cyr Family (Annette and Ralph) attend the volunteer appreciation dinner each year and provide financial support for the trophies which are given to the outstanding athletes. They support the volunteer appreciation dinner event with donations they make throughout the year in Ralph's memory.
The athletes led the opening events of the dinner by marching in to the Olympic Fanfare. Athletes were very excited to receive the trophies. Cyr athletes will be recognized at events throughout the year in the areas where they reside. Athletes can carry the banner of their agencies or school at the annual spring games and be recognized by their peers at the annual victory celebration. According to Marian Turner, Director of Development for the Genesee Region, "these athletes should be recognized year round at special events. Their accomplishments are many and they are truly outstanding representatives of our athlete population." Special Thanks goes to the Cyr Family who have designated this award each year for the athletes.
