Special Olympics athletes in Monroe County competed on July 24th in a local equestrian event held at the Heritage Christian Stables in Webster. It was the third year for the local event Twenty Seven athletes competed in the event led by Event Coordinator Janet Zimmer and Special Olympics Coordinators Kelly Nash and Kim Kennedy. The day was cool but perfect for the competition. Opening Ceremonies were led by Program Director Steve Fuller and Marian Turner. The National Anthem was sung by Kathi Salico, a Heritage Christian Stables Volunteer. Each Horse and Rider was introduced by announcer Beth Stevens. Athletes competed in Equitation and the trail ride. Judging the event was Dr. David Trachtenberg. Stables represented in addition to Heritage were Lehman Farms and Coleman Farm. Instructors were Janet Zimmer, Niki Whilden, Debi Metcalfe, and Merike Treir. Director of the Heritage Christian Stable is Andrew Little. Special thanks was given to the loyal volunteers who groomed and braided the horses the day before the event. The Faithful Horses were Duncan, Murdock, Felix, Andy. Angel, Saxon, Kelley, Pandy, Prince, Shane, Dakota and Gus.
Regional Equestrian…September 18thHeritage Christian Stables hosted the Regional Competition for Special Olympics New York-Genesee Region on Saturday, September 18th.This proved to be an event where a volunteer and the community could witness first hand the talent Special Olympics athletes have for equestrian. Forty-eight athletes competed from Webster’s Heritage Christian Stables, Everybody Rides in Geneseo and Rainbow Ridge Therapeutic Center in Geneseo. The athletes were coached by Susan Epstein from Everybody Rides, Julie Burnett from Rainbow Ridge and Janet Zimmer, Nicki Whilden and Debi Metcalfe from Heritage Christian. Platinum Sponsor of the event was Senator James Alesi who secured a state member grant to fund the equestrian program. Other Support Sponsors were Dunkin Donuts, Sherwin Williams, Happy Ice, Monroe County Water Authority, Krispy Kreme, Patrick Lane and Sandy Zimmer, Bill Gray’s Restaurants, Mayflowers, Grossman’s Country Nursery and the Nazareth Equestrian Team. Medics volunteering their time were Marti Barhite, Ann Marron, John Stoner and Christy Monroe. Event Coordinators of the event were Kelly Nash, Kim Kennedy and Janet Zimmer.
