| Special Olympics New York | | Genesee Region Program Report December 8, 2008 | | | | | | | | Dear Darcie, | | It looks like our year is coming to a close as the final two competitions of the year were held this past weekend. The Genesee Central Local Floor Hockey Skills Competition took place at the Holcomb Center in Geneseo on Thursday the 4th and was attended by around 20 athletes. The Genesee Local Gymnastics Competition took place at the Gymnastics Training Center in Penfield on Sunday the 7th and was attended by 35 athletes. Both were very nicely run local events and we can all congratulate Jenn Cerefin and Sarah Jane Clifford for a great job with their respective events. I would also like to add a quick thank you to Linda Steinmetz and Al Royter for a great job running the Region North Bowling Competition the last weekend in November. There were almost 500 athletes on hand for both days of the competition and everyone had a fantastic time. Coaches polos are in. They are green with the Special Olympic logo and the cost is $15. Important Reminder: Demand Case Survey's for this years Winter State Games are due back to us by December 10, 2008. If you dont get them in on time, then you will not get your athletes to state games. The Harlem GlobeTrotters will be in Elmira on February 5, 2009 and have offered a discounted rate to anyone involved with the Special Olympics. If you have any questions or would like to bring a group you can give me a call and I will get you all of the information. FILE FORMAT DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS DECEMBER 19, 2008 | | Young Athletes | | Young Athletes is an innovative sports play program for children ages 2-7 with intellectual disabilities, designed to introduce them to the world of sports prior to Special Olympics eligibility (age 8). This is a fun, participation-based program that teaches eye-hand coordination and motor skills through games and group activities. The Young Athletes program introduces children with intellectual disabilities and their families to the world of Special Olympics by pursuing the following goals: - Engage children with intellectual disabilities through developmentally appropriate play activities designed to foster physical, cognitive, and social development.
- Welcome family members of children with intellectual disabilities to the Special Olympics network of support.
- Raise awareness about the abilities of children with intellectual disabilities through inclusive peer participation, demonstrations and other events.
This is a versatile program that can work in various learning situations. The program is designed to be simple enough for families to use at home with their child. It is also appropriate for preschools, schools, playgroups and recreation programs to use with small groups of young children. The program includes several resources to get started including a Young Athletes Activities Guide, a Training DVD, Young Athletes Equipment Kit and and website for further resources, materials and information.
