| Special Olympics New York | | Genesee Region Program Report January 12, 2009 | | | | | | | | Dear Darcie, | | I hope that everyone is enjoying training for their respective winter sports. I just wanted to quickly mention for those who missed them, that we recently completed our Regional Poly Hockey and Super Regional Floor Hockey Tournaments at St. John Fisher and the New York Chiropractic College respectively. Poly Hockey was attended by 6 teams and we had the help of several volunteers from St. John Fisher College, The Pittsford Varsity Hockey Team and the Pittsford Interact Club. Super Regional Floor Hockey drew over 200 athletes competing in both team and skills from regions throughout Upstate and Western New York. We had a great turnout for both events and it looks like we should have the same for the Regional Alpine and Nordic and Snowshoe events this weekend. Good luck to all of our competing athletes! For anyone that is interested, two of our regional basketball teams from School 33 in Rochester will be competing during halftime at the Bishop-Kearny vs. Aquinas Varsity Basketball Game at Bishop-Kearny High School this Saturday at 7:30pm. There will be a small admission fee to gain entrance to this event and all proceeds directly benefit Special Olympics New York. Reminder: Be sure to periodically check the online file folder for registration forms for upcoming events. We have added the registration forms for Local Aquatics in Webster and Regional Bowling at Clover Lanes. As usual if you have any questions you should feel free to contact me using the information provided at the bottom of the page. | | | | | | Upcoming Competitions | | Regional Alpine Competition 9:30am Opening Ceremonies The deadline to register for this event was Friday January 16, 2009 Regional Nordic and Snowshoe Competition January 31, 2009 Bristol Mountain Ski Resort Event Schedule: 9:00am Registration 9:30am Opening Ceremonies The deadline to register for this event was Friday January 16, 2009 | | Future Events | | Winter State Games- February 6-8, 2009 Region South Local Bowling- February 21, 2009 Region Central Basketball- February 26, 2009 | | Calendar of Events | | Our calendar of events is also available online: Just Click Here! This is a fun, participation-based program that teaches eye-hand coordination and motor skills through games and group activities. The Young Athletes program introduces children with intellectual disabilities and their families to the world of Special Olympics by pursuing the following goals: - Engage children with intellectual disabilities through developmentally appropriate play activities designed to foster physical, cognitive, and social development.
- Welcome family members of children with intellectual disabilities to the Special Olympics network of support.
- Raise awareness about the abilities of children with intellectual disabilities through inclusive peer participation, demonstrations and other events.
This is a versatile program that can work in various learning situations. The program is designed to be simple enough for families to use at home with their child. It is also appropriate for preschools, schools, playgroups and recreation programs to use with small groups of young children. The program includes several resources to get started including a Young Athletes Activities Guide, a Training DVD, Young Athletes Equipment Kit and and website for further resources, materials and information. For more information on how to get started or a list of locations already participating around the region please email Rob Mitchell at rmitchell@nyso.org. | | Best Buddies Program | | A message from Jennifer Dreyer, Buffalo State University: Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization that's dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by helping to create one-to-one, lifelong friendships with their non-disabled peers. At Best Buddies Buffalo State we get involved in the community. Each person will receive their own buddy (college student or person with disability) that they will attend meetings and activities with. We are looking for 20-25 people with disabilities who would be willing to participate. Transportation is not provided unless contacted 48 hours before each meeting. | | "Let me win.
