Genesee Region Program Report

Weekly Program Report: June 19, 2008

For the Genesee Region

Summer Games Rock Binghamton

Where do I start? Thank you to everyone for making the Special Olympics Summer Games at SUNY Binghamton so successful. Once again we represented the Genesee Region the best possible way. Who can forget the carnival atmosphere when our Genesee athletes strode into opening ceremonies with flags, hats and the works or when the Genesee Express basketball team nearly pulled it back in the highlight game in front of over 2000 people? Let’s not forget our superb gymnasts, swimmers, runners (maybe the fastest around?), our Volleyball and Basketball Teams, our new Power lifters and everyone else that tried their best and took pride in representing the Genesee Region.

More than that, let’s not forget you guys- the coaches!! Without you, we have little to offer our athletes and you’ve stepped up time and time again. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts – you are the difference makers.

From here we are taking the shortest of breaks before jumping into the fall sports season. This will begin on August 9th with the fall conference where we will offer sports training in 4 sports. The exact location will be announced in next week’s report. The fall calendar is also complete and is included in this week’s report. There are a couple of location issues that we are resolving as far as the Golf Invitational and the Regional Softball event but the dates are set and you can prepare and plan accordingly.

So that’s it for now…have a great summer and keep checking your e-mails on a weekly basis!!!

Sincerely,

Robin Mitchell

Coaches Certification

Coaches-

We will be offering trainings in all of our main fall sports; Bocce, Soccer, Softball and Golf at the upcoming conference scheduled for August 9th. We will offer two back-to-back sessions, so there will be an opportunity to complete two sports.

We will also be offering both a General Session and an opportunity to complete Protective Behaviors online. As a result of this we will be following a strict guideline from this point forward going into all future events from local to state level. All coaches that are listed on registrations MUST be certified in the sport that they are coaching with no exceptions.

Having uncertified coaches undermines what we are trying to achieve. We are attempting to provide the best possible sporting experience for our athletes and this can only be achieved if we have coaches that are actively seeking to become as knowledgeable as possible about their chosen sport/s.

In preparation for future events and fall state games we will scratch any coach that is not up-to-date with all of their paperwork. This includes:

  1. Class A status and online Protective Behaviors complete.
  2. Completed coaching credentials for the sport that you are coaching.

Please note that only Protective Behaviors completed online is accepted as the past version is no longer valid.

If you are in doubt about your current status you should call the Program Department (585)586-7400 ext 107 as soon as possible and we will give your status and what needs to be completed in order to move forward. Thank you for your continued commitment to our amazing athletes and for your time in ensuring that this important step is taken.

Get Your Red Wings Tickets

It’s baseball season!

Red Wings tickets have been donated to Special Olympics.  We have tickets to the 12:05 game on Monday, August 11th.  If you have athletes and coaches that would like to attend please contact Julie Bell at 585-586-7400 x108 or via email at jbell@nyso.org.

A friendly reminder….

For any coaches that may need to use a Special Olympics vehicle, like the green van to transport your athletes (aka Big Green) we will need an updated photocopy of your driver’s license for our records and insurance purposes.  This needs to be done in advance of the next time you use Big Green and the copy will remain on file in our office.  We need to log each use to keep on file, too.  Please coordinate usage ahead of time, because we currently have the seats out to transport equipment to events.  Thanks!
